Kidepo Valley National Park is located in the rugged, semi-arid valleys of northeastern Uganda, in the Karamoja region, near the borders with South Sudan and Kenya. The park covers an area of 1,442 km² and is one of Africa’s most remote and untouched wilderness areas.

Kidepo is renowned for its vast savannah plains, rugged mountains, and exceptional wildlife diversity, including species not found in other Ugandan parks.

  • Big Cats: Lions, leopards, cheetahs (one of the few places in Uganda where cheetahs are found)
  • Large Herbivores: Elephants, giraffes (Rothschild’s and Nubian), buffaloes, zebras
  • Antelopes: Jackson’s hartebeest, elands, oribis, dik-diks, greater and lesser kudus (the only park in Uganda with kudus)
  • Predators & Scavengers: Spotted hyenas, black-backed jackals, side-striped jackals
  • Birdlife: Over 475 species, including ostriches, Abyssinian ground hornbills, and the rare Karamoja apalis

Game Drive Zones & Sectors

  1. Narus Valley – The prime wildlife area, with permanent water sources attracting lions, elephants, and buffaloes.
  2. Kidepo Valley – A seasonal riverbed with palm trees, sand rivers, and dry savannah; best visited in the dry season.
  3. Namamukweny Valley – A hidden gem for cheetah sightings and scenic landscapes.

Lomej Mountains – A great spot for hiking and birdwatching.
